How Much Do You Know About Cataracts?

by Nov 3, 2017

Directly behind the iris, there is a structure called the lens.  This lens helps the eye’s optical system to focus an image.  The lens is normally a clear structure which allows light to pass easily through it, helping us see a clear, crisp image.  However, throughout the aging process the lens often becomes cloudy.  This clouding of the lens is referred to as a cataract.

What are the Symptoms of a Cataract?

Cataracts are classified based on which part of the lens is becoming cloudy, and different types of cataracts may cause different symptoms.  All types of cataracts can cause some degree of worsening vision.  Oftentimes, those with cataracts may notice colors become less vibrant, see halos around lights, experience difficulty seeing at night, or even notice double vision.

When Do People Get Cataracts?

Cataracts can begin to affect people at different ages.  The majority of people tend to develop cataracts as they get older. This is generally a result of increased ultraviolet light exposure.  Cataracts can progress at different rates, cause a multitude of different visual changes, and require treatment at different times.  However, the important thing to remember is that, despite the time of onset or rate of progression, cataracts can almost always be easily and safely removed, and vision can be recovered after surgery.

Is Cataract Surgery Safe?

While a cataract may seem like a worrisome diagnosis, it is a completely normal and very common process that should not be feared.  In most cases, cataract progression occurs very slowly; it can take years of having a cataract before symptoms are noticed.  Cataract surgery is a safe and effective treatment option in many cases once the cataract begins to affect vision.  The majority of patients undergoing cataract surgery notice a significant improvement in vision after having their cataracts removed.
